There are a great
many R&B classics from the funk era that are not included here.
The bands that are least covered from this era are bands whose arrangements,
vocals, chord progressions, and instrumentation were too difficult
to emulate by most smaller working ensembles. For example Earth, Wind
& Fire had a great many hits, but few bands were able to cover
the majority of their material because of the incredible production
that was evident on most of their records. There were horns, strings,
and a gang of vocal harmonies that were all a part of the sound an
audience would unknowingly want to hear. Most smaller combos sound
ridiculous trying to play those songs; the sound is too big. However,
it is common for larger working bands to cover those songs if they
had a horn section and a couple of vocalists. This list is a healthy
dose of what is most-often called out on general working gigs around
the world, and requested by listeners:
1. AIN'T NOBODY - Chaka Khan (2 Hand 16TH)
8. CELEBRATION - Kool & the Gang (8TH)
12. EVERYDAY PEOPLE - Sly & the Family Stone (8TH)
19. GOT TO BE REAL - Cheryl Lynn (8TH)
25. JUNGLE BOOGIE - Kool & the Gang (8TH)
33. SEX MACHINE - James Brown (8TH)
39. SUPERSTITION - Stevie Wonder (Swing 8THs and 16THs with
backbeat)
44. THE WORLD IS A GHETTO - War (8TH)
45. THIS MASQUERADE - George Benson (8TH)
48. WHAT IS HIP - Tower of Power (Linear 8TH and 16TH)
